Heat Seal Parameters for Classic ExpressPrint® Label Tape

Standard application conditions:

Single-head machine settings:

Upper platen (with Teflon): 410º F
Lower platen (with silicone sponge): 400º F

Double-buck machine settings:

Upper platen (with Teflon): 410º F
Lower platen (with silicone sponge): 400º F

Time: 10 to 12 seconds

Pressure:

The goal is to achieve a net pressure of 20 to 30 psi inter-platen . Note that this is the pressure between the platens, not at the gauge . The pressure setting required at the gauge to produce a given pressure at the platen will depend on the size of the machine's air cylinder and on the platen (i.e. iron) being used. Recommended settings for some of the more popular models/configurations are as follows:

Texas Automation ES-32/ES-42 with 4"x6" platens: Set to 80 p.s.i. gauge.

Texas Automation ES-32/ES-42 with 2"x4" platens: Set to 40 p.s.i. gauge.

Penn Wizard with 4"x6" platens: Set to 60 p.s.i. gauge.

Natmar EasySeal with 4"x6" platens: Set to 60 p.s.i. gauge.

Thermopatch LS-11/LS-12 with 4"x5" platens: Set to 60 p.s.i. gauge.

Some brands of heatseal machine come equipped with a separate metal plate or shield that covers the upper iron. We suggest that it be removed, particularly on double-buck machines, and a standard self-adhesive Teflon sheet applied directly to the iron. Teflon that is badly worn or has accumulated contaminants (e.g. adhesive, starch, sizing) will tend to cause image transfer (even, to some extent, with traditional dot matrix ink). The Teflon should be wiped with a dry towel periodically, and changed if it appears frayed or worn.

If you do not currently have a source of supply of self-adhesive Teflon, Penn Emblem carries an ultra-high quality material that is especially suited to this purpose and is competitively priced. Customers have found that it stays clean longer and is more durable than standard duty materials, thereby reducing change-outs.

If your machine is not listed above, please contact Penn Emblem for guidance.
